A Kiss of Respect, Dubai Honours Captain Smit Machchhar

A kiss from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed on the head of an injured pilot gave public recognition a personal meaning. Captain Smit Machchhar was recovering in hospital when Dubai’s Crown Prince leaned towards him and offered that gesture of respect. The photograph shows a leader acknowledging a man whose actions helped protect others in an emergency. For the captain, his family and the people who shared that flight, the visit carried an unmistakable message. His courage had been noticed, and his contribution would be honoured.

Sheikh Hamdan, who is also the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, visited the flydubai captain on 3 October. The Emirates News Agency reported his praise for Machchhar’s courage, responsibility and concern for human life. His public message included the words “part of our team”. That recognition matters. It presented the Indian pilot as someone who belongs within the country’s working community and whose service contributes to its national story, rather than as an employee receiving a acknowledgement.

Machchhar had been injured during an attack inside the cockpit of a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Reporting on the incident describes how he opened the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene. Crew members and passengers helped bring the emergency under control, and the aircraft landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The successful landing depended on several people acting under pressure. The captain’s bravery deserves particular recognition, while the contributions of those who assisted him belong within the same account of survival.

The hospital visit also deserves attention because it placed the injured man before the public celebration. A person recovering from serious injuries needs treatment, reassurance and time. Recognition should support those needs. Sheikh Hamdan’s presence, and the respect visible in the photograph, offered an example of appreciation expressed directly to the person concerned. It acknowledged the physical cost of what had happened, alongside the courage that helped prevent a worse outcome.

There is a wider lesson for institutions. People whose decisions protect lives should receive credit and promptly. Their names should be recorded accurately, their colleagues acknowledged and their recovery treated as a responsibility. Public gratitude can encourage that approach, particularly when it comes from leadership. This visit showed the value of recognising an individual’s service in a way that his family, fellow workers and the wider public could understand without explanation.

Aviation safety usually depends on preparation, discipline and cooperation that passengers never see. During this emergency, those responsibilities became visible in the actions of people facing danger. Remembering the crew alongside the captain helps preserve that understanding. It also keeps the account focused on the lives protected, rather than allowing recognition to become detached from the work that earned it.

Thank you, Captain Smit Machchhar. Thank you to the flydubai crew, the passengers who intervened and everyone who helped bring the aircraft safely to the ground. Sheikh Hamdan’s gesture gave that gratitude a public expression. The hope now is for the captain’s recovery, with the care and respect his service deserves.
