A changed constitutional position. Peace must also be measured in daily life.

The government presents the removal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status in August 2019 as a decisive step toward integration and improved security. A current PIB note reports a sharp decline in terrorist-initiated incidents between 2018 and 2025. These are government-reported figures, and the comparison should retain its definitions and dates.

The argument that Modi corrected a mistake by Nehru is a political interpretation. Historical decisions arose in particular circumstances, and evaluating them requires more than a slogan. The present should also be judged through security, opportunity, political representation and residents’ ability to live without fear.

Supporters can recognise a major constitutional change while still asking what remains unfinished. Peace is strongest when citizens experience dependable institutions and a stake in their future. Tourism and public projects contribute to that assessment, but cannot alone settle every question.
