A short appreciation of an achievement that remains exceptional.
In 1988, Steffi Graf won all four Grand Slam singles championships and Olympic singles gold. WTA records recognise that calendar-year Golden Slam, alongside 22 major singles titles and 107 singles titles overall. Those are the foundations of this appreciation.
Her influence also lies in the clarity of her game. Movement, a formidable forehand and relentless competitive standards made greatness look economical. Retirement does not reduce the difficulty of what she achieved. This column celebrates the record without claiming a new appearance or private whereabouts that have not been verified.
